Women’s tennis star Ilona Stoyko and women’s soccer forward Demi-Jean Martorano have been awarded with CUNYAC weekly honors. Stoyko was awarded with Rookie of the Week while Martorano was given Player of the Week.
 
The Dolphins finished the week on a four game win streak with the help of freshman Stoyko. Against St. Josephs-Brooklyn the freshman took a 10-2 singles win along with an 8-0 win in doubles. On September 23 against City Tech she took her opponent in singles by a score fo 6-0, 6-1. In doubles, the combo of Stoyko and Villarruel to an 8-4 victory. In the final conference match of the week, Stoyko grabbed a 6-4, 6-4 singles win while she and Villarruel kept their opponents scoreless in doubles. Stoyko dropped just her second loss of the season in singles in a tough 2-6, 6-3, 7-10 finish. She took revenge in doubles play as the duo defeated their FDU opponents, 9-8 (7-5).
 
Also a freshman, Martorano has been an essential part of women’s soccer’s 5-1 record. The team finished 2-0 this week both conference games. Against John Jay on September 21, the 5-5 forward scored three goals on eight attempts helping CSI to an 8-0 shutout. On September 25, after both teams had a scoreless first half against CCNY, Martorano scored the lone and winning goal with seven minutes remaining in regulation.
 
Tennis will face Kean University on Thursday, September 30 at 3:30pm in Union, New Jersey while women’s soccer will be back in action on October 5against Drew University in a 4:00pm home game.
