Robin Carey, PEP Chair for more than 20 years and an economist, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Robin had a long and distinguished career at CSI, starting at Richmond College before the merger with the Staten Island Community College that became the present CSI. During her tenure as Chair, the Department suffered from a number of retirements of treasured faculty, especially in economics, Robin’s own discipline. However, she managed to start the rebuilding of the Department with some notable hires in politics, economics, philosophy and geography, a task that was continued and enhanced by her successors. Her retirement in 1999, while not unexpected when it came, was a sad day for those, especially among the junior faculty, who had long benefited from her help, support, and kindness. Her final years were clouded by the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, but she was well cared for by friends and family. She will be missed.

A memorial service for Robin will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 11:00am at Brighton Heights Reform Church on the corner of St. Mark’s and Fort Place.
