The College of Staten Island women’s volleyball team fell for the second-straight time, this time falling to City College of New York as part of CUNYAC play at the Nat Holman Gymnasium by a 3-1 final.  CCNY took the opener 25-18, before CSI rallied to garner a 25-17 lead in the second.  CCNY responded by returning the favor in the third set, 25-17, before winning the match in set four, 25-23.  The Beavers improved to 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the CUNYAC, while CSI fell to 3-3, 1-3 respectively.

After falling behind early, CSI rallied to take a brief lead in the opening frame, 7-5, helped along by a Vanessa Reyes ace.  CCNY went on a 9-2 run, however, and snatched the lead, never looking back.  A pair of kills by CCNY’s Leticia Marotti helped spearhead the late effort.

CSI got even in the second, never trailing.  CCNY cut the lead at one point to 14-13, but CSI finished the set on an 11-6 run to end it, helped along by a Siobhan Granich ace and three kills by Pola Poskrobko.

After grabbing a quick, 1-0, lead in the third, CCNY dominated, using three Marotti kills to help CCNY take a 9-1 lead, assuming full control.  CSI would cut the lead to four but then a couple of more kills by Angela Ubanwa helped put the set out of reach.

In a very competitive fourth set, the lead was exchanged a trio of times.  CCNY grabbed their first lead at 10-9 on a Saye-Chant Joseph service ace.  CSI rallied to take back the lead but a couple of critical errors by the Dolphins gave the lead away again.  The Beavers led by four late, 21-17, but again CSI came back, forcing a tie at 22-22 after an attack error.  However, two kills by Marotti as part of her big night helped seal the win and CCNY emerged victorious after four frames.

Marotti finished with 20 kills, adding 16 digs and five aces.  Joseph would add 10 kills, while posting 14 digs.  CSI was led by Poskrobko’s 9 kills.  Victoria Wong and Selma Kolenovic shared the defensive load with 17 digs each.

CSI will next play on Sunday, when they travel to the College of New Rochelle for the St. Joseph’s College tri-match.  CSI will begin play at 2pm.
