On a night when they would shoot less than 30% from the field, the College of Staten Island women’s basketball team dropped a 69-52 decision at the hands of Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY, as part of CUNYAC play.  The loss derailed CSI’s win streak of six games, and dipped the Dolphins down to 11-9 overall and 8-3 in the CUNYAC, while Brooklyn improved to 14-5, 11-1, respectively.

BC raced out to an early, 10-2, lead; sparked by two Asia Foster buckets.  CSI, however, turned the tide, and eventually stormed back to grab a 15-14 lead at 13:18 of the first stanza, thanks to a Christina Pasaturo three.  The teams then traded baskets and the lead a handful of times before a Nacirema Mann layup at 7:43 gave the Bulldogs back the lead.  After falling down by seven, CSI used an 8-0 run to end the half to take a 29-28 lead going into intermission, finally taking the lead on a Victoria Crea layup with 42 seconds left.

The Dolphins enjoyed the halftime edge but it did not last long.  To start the second frame, Chrissy Heyer canned a three-pointer, starting an immediate 11-0 run that last the first 3:37 of the half, and by the end of it, BC had themselves a 39-29 edge, their largest of the game.

Mired in poor shooting, CSI was able to hit back-to-back shots before suffering through a 0-7 stretch that lasted seven minutes, as BC erupted to take a commanding 56-34 lead with 9:08 left in the game, out-scoring the Dolphins in the second half to that point, 28-5.

From there, CSI tried to cut into the lead, but could only knock it down to as few as 15 before BC settled for the comfortable, 69-52 win.   BC shot 41.3% for the game to CSI’s 28.4%, out-rebounding the Dolphins by a colossal 64-38 count.  The Bulldogs’ only weakness was the turnover, as they committed 17 errors to the Dolphins’ seven.

Leading the way for CSI was Crea with 19 points, while Pasaturo dumped in 14 points to go with a team-high 9 rebounds.  Brooklyn was led by Megan Campbell’s 25 points, adding 16 rebounds.

With eight more rebounds tonight, CSI senior Nikki Fabozzi went over 600 for her career, becoming only the 9th player in CSI history to record the feat.

The Dolphins will return to action on Tuesday, February 3, when they host City College of New York at 5:30pm at the Sports & Recreation Center.
