The Eastern College Athletic Conference has named its Metro NY/NJ Baseball All-Stars, and a College of Staten Island pair have been named to the first team while two others have earned Honorable Mention. Sophomore Anthony DiMarco was named to the All-Star squad alongside junior pitcher Derek Jentz, while senior Frank Sconzo joined junior Glenn Glennerster as one of eight Honorable Mentions by the conference.
A first-team CUNYAC All-Star, DiMarco earned most of his starts at third base this season, seeing time at second base as well. As one of CSI’s hottest hitters to close the season, he finished with a .348 average at the dish, leading CSI with 14 doubles and a .497 on-base percentage, thanks to his 33 bases-on-balls. DiMarco added 19 RBI and was tied for second on the unit with 27 runs scored. He stole five bases this season and DiMarco boasted a .957 glove, finishing second on the unit with 78 total assists defensively.
DiMarco was joined by CUNYAC Pitcher of the Year Derek Jentz, who transferred to the Dolphins by way of Kingsborough Community College. Jentz impressed in his CSI debut, going 4-2 this season with a 2.16 ERA, allowing just 10 earned runs in 41.2 innings of work. Jentz allowed just 28 hits against 44 strikeouts, walking only 10 batters. He was easily tops on the Dolphins in opponent batting average, as the opposition posted just a .183 clip against him, and Jentz only allowed five extra base hits, all doubles.
CUNYAC All-Stars Sconzo and Glennerster earned on as Honorable Mentions. Sconzo, a senior who started all 39 games in 2017 went .299 at the plate, leading CSI and setting a new single season record with 36 walks, lifting his on-base percentage to .467. He led the Dolphins with 38 runs scored, adding 23 RBI and 11 stolen bases, the second-highest number on the team. Glennerster was the official leader on the team with a .362, also making all 39 starts in the outfield. Glennerster led all with 48 hits, 11 for extra bases including three home runs. Glennerster was tops on the team with 28 RBI.
The Dolphins capped the season 27-11-1, winning the CUNYAC Championship for the third straight time and 19th overall. The team ended the year ranked No. 9 in the New York Regional by the NCAA.
