The College of Staten Island men’s soccer team has fallen upon hard times recently and were unable to bounce-back from their 4-3 defeat against Baruch the other night.  This afternoon the Dolphins took on Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, NY for another CUNYAC game and fell 2-1 in extra time, dropping their record to 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the CUNYAC.

The Dolphins nearly got on the board early on in this contest, however, Ali Fares saw his shot go over the bar to keep the game knotted at zero. Adrian Cosovic put Utku Tanritanir, Brooklyn’s goalkeeper, to work in the 11th minute as he uncorked a shot that forced a save. Just moments later, Cosovic would find himself on the penalty kick spot looking to put the ball in the back of the net and lift his team to a 1-0 lead. Tanritanir would get the better of Cosovic in this meeting as Cosovic would have his attempt parried wide to keep the game deadlocked.

After not registering a shot for 25 minutes, the Bulldogs brought on Azizjon Ziyaev to bring a spark to the team.  Ziyaev needed just two minutes to make an impact in the game.  A Dolphins foul would give Ziyaev and the Bulldogs a free kick opportunity in range for a scoring opportunity.  Ziyaev did just that when he was able to bury the free kick chance and give his team the lead on their first shot of the game. The Dolphins kept their pressure on the Bulldogs but kept seeing their attempts saved or go wide of their mark.

Staten Island had a substantial 7-0 edge in corner kicks at the half while also holding an 11-3 lead in shots.

Balint Barabas was called upon to make clutch saves for his team in the second half as the Bulldogs started to threaten.  CSI was able to find their first goal and tie the game up in the waning moments of the game.  Another penalty opportunity for the Dolphins, this time it would be Vasyl Fedortsi stepping to the spot.  Fedortsi would make sure to put his attempt in the back of the net and he did just that in the 82nd minute.

When the final whistle blew, both sides were tied at one apiece and the game would head into extra time.  The Dolphins would be charged with three fouls, with the third one being the one that led to their demise.  Once again, from 20 yards out, Ziyaev stepped over the free kick and once again put it in the back of the net to lift his team over the Dolphins.

Staten Island will return to action on Wednesday, October 4 when they will take on Hunter College at 3:30 pm.
