The College of Staten Island men’s tennis team officially introduced the 2018 season this past weekend, and after a successful showing in their opener they now have a weekly honor to show for it.  Junior Raymond Hwang, a double-winnner this weekend took home the Player of the Week honor from the City University of New York Athletic Conference, the first of the season for the Dolphins.

Hwang was instrumental for the Dolphins, as he was one of two CSI upperclassmen who posted wins in both doubles and singles on Saturday.  Firs, in doubles, he teamed up with freshman David Luo to score an 8-4 win over Rutgers – Newark’s Richard Nguyen and Kevin Martin.  That helped stake CSI to a 2-1 lead after doubles play.  Located right in the middle of the order, Hwang then followed with a one-sided win in the No. 3 spot over RU’s Nguyen by scores of 6-2, 6-1.

A CUNYAC All-Star in 2015, Hwang missed the entire 2016 season before rejoining the Dolphins in 2017, when he posted a 4-5 overall record in singles, which included a 2-2 mark at the No. 3 spot.  Hwang was 7-8 in doubles matches with three different partners.

CSI is slated to get back to the courts on Tuesday, when they open CUNYAC play against John Jay College at 4:30pm at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows.
