Staten Island, NY | The College of Staten Island men’s tennis team got one step closer to a CUNYAC Championship on Friday evening, skating by John Jay College by a 5-0 score indoors at the CSI Tennis Center.  CSI improved to 10-4 overall and will face No. 2 Baruch College on Sunday, April 29, at the National Tennis Center.  John Jay finalized their season at 3-8.

CSI was convincing in this one right from the start, feeding off of what was a 9-0 regular season win over John Jay just a week ago.  David Luo and Tao Lin came off of the courts first with an 8-0 win over JJC’s Michael Barkagan and Mauricio Ramos.  Flights 1 & 2 finished with identical 8-1 scores.  Alex Tsui and Andrew Adia did the honors at the top flight over JJC’s Oleh Mir and Sean Kim, while Matthew Vesci and Mitchel Voloshin equaled the effort in the second flight over Kevin LaTorre and Jowel Ahmed.

When play moves to singles, CSI needed to win only two flights to clinch the win, and CSI got the wins right at the top of the order where both Adia at No. 2 and Luo at No. 3 won identical 6-0, 6-0, sets to lift CSI to the win.

A strong and determined CSI had won the first set in all of the other flights as well and held leads at the time of the stoppage.

The Dolphins have now won five straight, and have now won nine of their last 10 matches, the only loss to NCAA Division I Wagner College.  They will face a Bearcats team in the Semifinals that handed CSI a 7-2 loss back on March 30, part of what was a 1-3 start for CSI.

The CUNYAC’s other quarterfinal match between No. 4 Lehman and No. 5 Brooklyn was postponed due to rain and will be played this morning at 11:00 am.  The winner of that match will face top-seeded Hunter College on Sunday in the other Semifinal contest.
