Multiple national publications say CSI among America’s top colleges

September 19, 2018

A view of activity in the rotunda of the College's library. CSI's reputation is growing as more discover its beautiful campus, excellent student services, winning athletic teams, comprehensive education offerings, and distinguished, award-winning faculty.

Another respected national publication has recognized the College of Staten Island as one of the nation’s top institutions of higher education – the third in less than a month to do so. The College is one of America’s Best Colleges, according to U.S. News & World Report.

“The news is spreading that the College of Staten Island delivers on its commitment to Student Success, which is our top priority,” said CSI President William J. Fritz. “We provide an excellent education at a reasonable price. As one of the three senior institutions of The City University of New York, we offer Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees across 24 programs and departments. And we have the largest and the most attractive campus.”

Just a week earlier, The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education ranking also recognized the College’s high quality. At the live release of the ranking at a reception in Manhattan, an editor from Times Higher Education said that student outcomes were at the center of its analysis.

“The WSJ/THE ranking places young people and their families front and center, with student success and learning at its core,” said Phil Baty, editorial director of global rankings. “The trusted listing is built around a huge survey of nearly 200,000 current student voices, providing their own insights, view of teaching, learning and life on campus. It offers a rounded and practical understanding of the strengths of individual institutions and the lifelong value of a degree.”

In late August, Forbes similarly listed the College on its list of America’s Top Colleges 2018.

Each publication’s analysis is based on large datasets regarding a number of aspects of a college’s or university’s programs: Graduation rates, the ratio of students to faculty, student satisfaction, salaries of students who have graduated, and, in the case of U.S. News & World Report, the level of debt students face after graduating. Each publication asserts, however, that it looks primarily at the results or outcomes students obtain from attending particular institutions.

From a number of perspectives, the rankings show that the College of Staten Island is among the top educational institutions in the U.S. today. Forbes listed the College at No. 504 – and No. 179 among public colleges. The College is No. 142-187 on the U.S. News & World Report ranking for “Regional Universities North,” and #134 in Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs. The WSJ/THE ranking listed the College as No. 650.

There are about 3,000 four-year institutions of higher education in the U.S.

The accolades for the College continue to mount: Last year, the College earned the Number 1 spot on the Military Friendly® Schools list for large public schools in the nation for 2017-2018. From 2010-2016, the College of Staten Island ranked in the top 15% nationwide for public schools, placed Number 8 in 2017, and achieved the top spot nationwide for 2017-2018. CSI is also ranked a Military Spouse Friendly school.
