Seeing the Monumental in the Minute: German Renaissance Prints in the Age of Dürer

Thu. Oct. 3, 2013 —  Sat. Nov. 9, 2013 —  Multi-Day

“Seeing the Monumental in the Minute: German Renaissance
Prints in the Age of Durer” from the Wetmore Print Collection of
Connecticut College.

The Gallery of the College of Staten Island/CUNY is pleased
to
announce the first exhibition of the Fall Semester, Seeing the
Monumental in the Minute: German Renaissance Prints in the
Age
of Dürer from the Wetmore Print Collection of Connecticut
College.

The show will open on Thursday, October 3, 2013
and
close on Saturday, November 9, 2013. The opening
reception will
be on Thursday, October 3, 2013 from 5 – 7 pm.

Thirty
two engravings from the late fifteenth century to the early
sixteenth century will be on view and will include works by the
master printmakers of the period, Martin Schongauer, Hans
Sebald Beham and the incomparable Albrecht Durer. These
works from the early history of Western printmaking are as
exquisite in their technique and execution as they are in their
diminutive size. They testify to the burgeoning interest in
secular
subject-matter and scenes recalling daily life. Charming
depictions
of dancing peasants, market place and banqueting scenes
are
added to the artists' repertoire of religious and
mythological
scenes. The art of Rembrandt, Hogarth, Goya, the
Impressionists, as well as modern art movements are all
heirs to
this dynamic and innovative period in the history of Western
Art.
