Staten Island, NY | The CUNYAC undefeated Staten Island softball team complete the series sweep of Baruch College, 8-0, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at the CSI Softball Complex.

The Dolphins (14-10, 8-0) were lifted to the pair of victories over the Bearcats (10-12, 6-4)  by stellar performances in the circle for the Dolphins.

Game 1 | Staten Island 8, Baruch 0 (5 inn.)

Nicolette Trapani had her stuff all afternoon and struck out 9 Bearcats en route to her sixth win of the season.  Trapani needed only 72 pitches to get through the five innings and allowed just four hits in the shutout.

Staten Island jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in its first at-bat.  Patricia Riches started the Dolphins off with a lead-off double to left center. Riches wouldn’t have to wait long as Antoinette Galbo singled up the middle as Riches flew home to notch the first run of the game for the Dolphins. An error and a wild pitch moved Galbo over to third before Vanessa Jioia pushed one up the middle for an RBI single.

In the second the Dolphins caught fire, scoring four runs on five hits and using a pair of errors to extend the inning. For Baruch, the inning looked promising after back-to-back outs to start the inning. Riches would strike again, hitting a hard hit ball to the third baseman.  During Galbo’s at-bat, Riches would steal second and would find her way crossing the dish as an overthrown ball wound up in the outfield.

The Dolphins’ RBI leader, Jamie Holmes, tallied her lone RBI of the day when she drove in Galbo with a single to left center. Erica Olsen brought in the final run of the inning with a single which crossed Holmes.

CSI tallied two more runs in the fourth after Jioia tallied her second RBI of the game and a wild pitch brought Galbo across the plate.

Both Riches and Galbo finished the game 3-for-3 while Jamie Holmes and Erica Olsen both collected a pair of hits.

Game 2 | Staten Island 6, Baruch 0

Alison Meagher bounced back nicely from yesterday’s game and threw a one-hitter in game two.  Meagher was one out away when Nicole Bellini knocked one through the left side to break up the no-hitter in the top of the seventh. Meagher struck out two in seven innings of work.

Game two the Dolphins didn’t find their way onto the scoreboard until the bottom of the third inning. Once again, the Dolphins scored two runs after starting the inning with back-to-back outs. An error would be the cause of the inning as Galbo reached first on an error in left field. Jioia made sure to get the scoring going when she tattooed a shot through the left side.  Holmes wanted to get in on the action as well and did so with a single through the left side to score Jioia.

In the fourth, the Dolphins used three hits and an error to score three runs to increase their lead to 5-0.  Nicole Meilak recorded her third RBI of the season with an RBI double to center field and wound up moving to third on a fielding error. Meilak would be brought home by Riches who tripled to center field.

The Dolphins would go on to score one more run to increase their lead to 6-0 to earn the CUNYAC sweep over Baruch College.

Up next for the Dolphins is another CUNYAC doubleheader tomorrow night against York College at 4:30 pm.
