Film and music critic Ernest Hardy will discuss “Black, White, Puerto Rican… Everybody’s Just-a-Freakin’: The Writer’s Identity in Criticism” on Monday, March 30 at the College of Staten Island.
Ernest Hardy is a Sundance Fellow whose music and film criticism have appeared in The New York Times, the Village Voice, LA Weekly, Vibe, Rolling Stone, the LA Times, and Flaunt.
He’s a contributor to the reference books 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die and Classic Material: The Hip-Hop Album Guide, as well as the book Ultimate Insider’s Guide. His first collection of criticism, Blood Beats Vol. 1: Demos, Remixes and Extended Versions, was published in 2006 and was a recipient of the 2007 PEN / Beyond Margins Award. His second book, Blood Beats Vol. 2: The Bootleg Joints, was published in February 2008.
He has written liner notes for Chuck D Presents: Louder than a Bomb; Curtis Mayfield: Gospel; and the box sets Love, Luther; Say It Loud: A Celebration of Black Music in America; and Superstars of Seventies Soul. He is co-editor of the literary anthology War Diaries (to be published in summer 2009) and is currently working on two books on the works of visual artist Mark Bradford.
The event is free and open to the public, and take place in the CSI Library Theatre (1L-103) at 2:30 p.m. It is sponsored by the College’s Department of English.
