New freshman attend a workshop at the ODS Summer Institute.
The Office of Disability Services (ODS) at the College of Staten Island is proud to be holding its annual “Freshman Connections Summer Institute” in the summer of 2011.
During these one-day programs, Office staff guide new students through interactive workshops, disseminate important information about services and accommodations, discuss self-advocacy and professor outreach, and provide students with an individualized campus tour.
Unlike CSI’s new two-day New Student Orientation, this program is not mandatory, but because it is an effective learning experience, students are strongly encouraged to attend.
The Office saw more than a dozen students at each of its June sessions and continues to receive confirmations for three more one-day programs slated for August.
The Freshman Connections Summer Institute workshop topics include:
- Differences between special education in high school and disability services at the college level
- Academic and personal growth, and social activities that will empower students
- The most up-to-date and innovative assistive technology
- How to increase learning potential and get better grades
- Connection to faculty and an introduction to working among and as scholars
“I’m inspired by the Program’s growth, and working with our new freshmen before they begin college fosters an environment that improves student retention and achievement and plays a direct role in the Office’s 90% freshman retention rate,” commented Chris Cruz Cullari, Director of the Office of Disability Services.
