College of Staten Island men’s basketball inside duo Jordan Young and Matt Van Manen combined for 41 points and 23 rebounds, as the Dolphins out-shined the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 69-55, in a non-conference matchup in Riverdale, New York, this evening. CSI won their fifth straight to move to 5-2 on the year, while MSV dropped to 1-5.
Young and Van Manen combined to shoot 19-of-28 from the field, while the rest of the unit shot a paltry 7-33. The Dolphins raced out to a rapid, 16-7, edge after the game’s first 5:54, as the duo compined for five baskets in the early going. The steady play continued as CSI took its biggest lead of the frame, 28-15, with 7:55 to go, capped on a Bloochy Magloire runner in the lane and a pair of Dylan Bulger freebies. CSI seemed to be in cruise control until the Dolphins of MSV came roaring back. A 13-5 run to end the frame, spearheaded by seven Cody Gauvard points pulled MSV to within just two points, until a Young layup at the first half buzzer made the score, 33-29, in CSI’s favor.
After the teams traded early baskets in the second half, CSI got the sizable run it was looking for. Another fast-break layup by Young got CSI started on a 22-6 run that spanned nearly 11 minutes of play. Young and Van Manen scored 16 points in the run, burying the host-Dolphins on the interior. MSV was able to knock the 20-point lead down to 14 three seperate times, but CSI always had an answer.
The Dolphins were led by Young’s 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Van Manen notched 16 and 10 respectively. MSV saw 13 points for Sean Caputo, while Shaquille Cunningham scored 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. The Dolphins out-rebounded MSV, 49-39, and CSI recorded a season-high 11 blocked shots in the game.
CSI returns to action on Friday nightm when they travel to PSU-Berks for a 7pm non-conference contest.
