The College of Staten Island men’s and women’s basketball programs enjoyed an undefeated run last week and were rewarded with a pair of weekly honors by a pair of familiar faces. Junior forward Will Fonseca bagged his second CUNYAC Player of the Week honor, while freshman guard Christina Pasaturo glided to her eighth-consecutive Rookie of the Week citation. CSI was a combined 5-0 last week.
The CSI women took both of their meetings last week against CUNYAC competition, scoring a pair of lopsided wins over York College and Medgar Evers College. Pasaturo was sensational in each, and increased her 20+ point scoring efforts to four straight games with the matches last week. Against York, she sank 9 baskets, including a trio from downtown en route to a 24 point performance, where she added 11 rebounds, the most for the freshman since the opening game of the season. Against MEC three days later, Pasaturo only played 23 minutes, but it was enough time to score 20 points on 8-12 shooting from the field. She added six rebounds in victory along with a pair of steals. For the week, Pasaturo banked an average of 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest.
For the season, Pasaturo leads the Dolphins with a 16.2 points per game average, collecting 6.1 rebounds per game, good for second-highest on the squad. She is also second on the squad with 37 assists and third with 25 steals.
Fonseca had a big week for the Dolphins, which is fast becoming the norm for the 11-5 unit that has won four in a row. Fonseca started with a healthy 18-point, 11 rebound performance against non-conference FDU-Florham in a game where he only played 23 minutes due to foul trouble. Two days later Fonseca poured in 16 points on 7-15 shooting in a 72-59 win over York, where he also amassed a career-high 19 rebounds to go with five assists. On Saturday in a 9-point win over Medgar Evers, Fonseca shot 10-15, powering to 23 points and another 14 rebounds. In three games, the junior amassed a healthy 19 points and 14.3 rebounds per contest.
CSI has since recorded another win over Kean, and Fonseca is averaging 24.6 points per game this season to go with 12.7 rebounds. He also leads the squad defensively with 27 blocks and 26 steals.
Both CSI teams are next in action on Wednesday, January 21, when they travel to face Hunter College. The women tip off at 5pm while the men get underway at 7pm.
