The College of Staten Island women’s soccer team competed in a lone event last week, and after a lopsided victory over York College, CSI freshman Lauren Smith was tabbed the City University of New York Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Week, it was announced today.

The Dolphins left little to doubt in their 11-0 win over York College last Wednesday, upping their record to 6-2 overall and 2-1 within the CUNYAC.  Smith, a freshman midfielder from Islip, NY, was a central part of the balanced CSI attack that afternoon that tallied 38 shots.  Smith led the way with seven shots, but it was her passing that shined most.  In the 11th minute, Smith dribbled in a through-ball to Kathryn Dowling that the senior struck through the net to give CSI a 3-0 lead at the time.

Smith was also a factor on CSI’s final goal of the first half, turning a turnover into a breakaway and launching a shot that registered for a goal to make it 6-0.  To intro the second half of the game, Smith tallied two more assists in a span of 1:45 to open up the lead further.  The first assist was on a cross that Danielle Smith tapped home, and the next came on a corner kick that Stephanie Rivera punched in.

The three assists were the first of Smith’s career, and marks the 10th time in CSI single game history that a player has registered three-plus assists in a single game.  Smith also has three goals this season, tied for fifth on the team.

?CSI resumes their season this coming Wednesday, when they travel to St. Joseph’s College (LI) for a 7pm, non-conference, contest.
