The College of Staten Island men’s volleyball had their three match win streak snapped tonight at the hands of Baruch College. The men did their best to try and stop the perennial power Bearcats but their attack was just too much to handle as Baruch swept the Dolphins 3-0 (8-25, 5-25, 15-25).
The men kept the battle close early in the first set and before the Bearcats were able to pull away Staten Island had it within just a point, 6-7. The Bearcats would then go on an 11-0 run to give them an 18-6 lead at which point they would never look back as CSI would only score two more points in the set. The Bearcats hit .542 as a squad in the first set, recording 14 kills and just one error. Nathaniel Chin led the way for the Bearcats with five kills on eight attacks in the first set. Song Shin Low had two of Staten Island’s five kills in the first set on six total attacks for a hit percentage of .333.
Set two didn’t go much better for the Dolphins as they were only able to muster up five points against a stout Bearcat team. This time it was Jacob Rudin who hammered the Dolphins for eight kills on 9 attacks while hitting .889. CSI couldn’t get their offense moving in the second set as every attack they sent Baruch’s way, the Bearcats were able to just block it back at the Dolphins. Staten Island also had trouble dealing with Baruch’s serves as they were able to tally up six in this set alone. Justin Edwardsen was finally able to get on the score sheet this set after he slammed home two kills on six attacks and a single error.
The third set saw the Dolphins put up more points than the first two sets combined. After falling behind 0-7 early the men were able to rally back and close the gap to 8-12. The Dolphins amassed five kills with five errors on 19 attacks in the final set of the night. Song Shin Low tallied two kills with three errors on six attacks and one block.
The Dolphins will return to action on Saturday in a tri-match at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center against Rutgers-Newark and Rust College. CSI vs Rutgers-Newark will be the first game at 11:00 am followed by Rutgers-Newark vs Rust College at 1:00 pm, and then CSI vs Rust College will close out the tri-match against each other at 3:00 pm.
