The College of Staten Island men’s soccer team squared off against #11 Rutgers-Newark at the CSI Soccer Complex this afternoon at 4:00 pm. The Scarlet Knights used their quick play to stay undefeated (10-0) after a 5-0 win over the Dolphins. Staten Island saw their eight-game win streak come to a close with the loss to drop them to 8-2 on the year.
The Dolphins were on the defensive from the starting whistle as the Scarlet Raiders used their speed and passing ability to keep the pressure on the Dolphins’ defense. 12 minutes into the game De Sousa found himself one-on-one with Barreraserao but was unable to convert thanks to a glorious save. Rutgers-Newark would find paydirt in the 14th minute, however, after several waves of attacks. Fabio De Sousa took on two Dolphin defenders along the left wing and sent in a low cross that was tapped to a wide open Chigozi Atubi at the back post. All Atubi needed to do was tap it in the back of an open net for the games first goal. Adrian Cosovic would test Rutgers keeper with a shot of his own, one of two shots he was able to rip off in this afternoon’s contest.
The Scarlet Knights would score another pair of goals late in the first half to increase their lead to 3-0 over the Dolphins. A misplay by goalkeeper Ivan Barrerserao would open the net for Zachary Gillespie to send a hard shot into the open goal. The third goal came when the Dolphins had a breakdown on defense and allowed Bryan Rodrigues to get loose in the box and tuck it under Barreraserao.
Just five minutes into the second half, Barreraserao would be subbed out in favor of fellow freshman goalie, Balint Barabas. Barabas would endure the same pressure and allow two goals of his own. The Dolphins were able to lock down the Raiders with 12 minutes left in the game as they only allowed two shots during that span.
The Dolphins will look to rebound on Wednesday, September 27 when they head to Baruch College for a CUNYAC game at 6:00 pm.
