The College of Staten Island women’s basketball team defended their home court for the first time this season against the intruding Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle. The Dolphins cruised past the Blue Angels 94-52 en route to a 2-0 record while dropping the Blue Angels to 0-1 on the year.
Coming into the game this afternoon Christina Pasaturo was 24-points shy of setting the new CSI all-time school scoring record while fellow teammate, Samantha Flecker was just 14-points away from being the 18th member in CSI’s women’s basketball history to join the 1,000-point club. Both Pasaturo and Flecker reached those marks in the first half, thanks to a 54-point outburst.
The Dolphins jumped out to a large lead in the first quarter, holding the Blue Angels to just two points, the lowest mark they’ve held an opponent to this season. The Dolphins shot 46% from the floor in the first quarter while holding the Angels to an ice cold 5%. The lone basket in the first quarter for the Angels was converted by Dar’Neisha Brice to break a 17-0 opening run by the Dolphins. Angelique Price added support on the night, converting 4-of-9 from the floor for a season-high 12 points.
CSI moved the ball with ease around the perimeter this afternoon as the speed of play was too much for the Blue Angels to handle. New Rochelle would commit 29 turnovers, one of the Dolphins’ strong points dating back to last season, as the quick hands of Staten Island defense were able to get a hand on each pass. Off of those turnovers, the Dolphins would score 38 of their points, while also cashing in 18 fast break points.
Staten Island, led by Pasaturo and Flecker would continue to find open shots to increase the lead over their opponents. As the game wore on the Blue Angels found it tougher to claw back into the game. CSI would knock down 11 of their 29 attempts from three-point range in the win. In the second half of the game, the Dolphins used a majority of their reserves which led to a career-high in rebounds for Nicole Imbesi when she tallied 9 in this afternoon’s contest.
The Dolphins return to action on Monday, November 20 when they host Wagner College at 7:00 pm in the Battle of the Borough.
