The College of Staten Island Women’s Tennis team was the last fall unit to open their season today, and it was a tough one, as the Dolphins fell hard to St. Thomas Aquinas College by a 7-0 count in Sparkill, NY. The Spartans won for the second-straight time to lift their overall record to 2-1, while Staten Island will start at 0-1 to begin 2019.
From the outset, the Spartans proved too tough for the Dolphins, who failed to register a set win in Doubles to open play. Carla Mentrup and Ayesha Burnett in the No. 2 position were the first to score a win for STAC, doing it over CSI’s tandem of Mariah DeGuia and Iris Cule, 6-0. Moments later, in the top flight, Sofia Shutko and Eliza Mulder did the same against CSI’s Hannah Bruschi and Lorianna Fernandez. In the No. 3 spot, Katerina Lopez and Maya O’Brien were crisp in a 6-0 win over freshman CSI duo Chana David and Jasmine Shaikh.
In Singles action, Shutko (No. 1), Mulder (No. 2), Mentrup (No. 3), Lopez (No. 4), and O’Brien (No. 5), were also victorious while Anna Ristova, who only played at No. 6 Singles today, was also able to garner a win. CSI’s only game point scored came in the No. 2 spot, where Fernandez fell to Mulder, 6-1, 6-0.
CSI will now get a few days off before taking on St. Joseph’s College of Brooklyn on Saturday at 12 Noon in what will be their home opener at the CSI Tennis Center.
