The History Department of the College of Staten Island CUNY Fall 2021 History Lecture Series presents: “The Young Lords: A Struggle for Puerto Rican Liberation,” a talk and discussion with Victor Cruz, BA and MA in History, and candidate for the Certificate in Public History, CSI History Department on Friday, Oct. 15 at 2:30pm via Zoom. The moderators will be Professor Eric A. Ivison and Adjunct Assistant Professor Joseph Frusci.

The Young Lords were a Chicago-based turf gang turned political activist group during the 1960s-1770s. As the Puerto Rican counterpart to the Black Panthers, the Young Lords believed in fostering revolutionary thinking in response to systemic oppression within black and brown communities. Although the movement was short lived, the message of the Young Lords resonated with many young Puerto Ricans in the Diaspora and inspired activists and artists for decades to come. This lecture explores the history of the Young Lords group, discusses why it was so important, and how it has continued to inspire modern-day Latinx activists.
