Based on a study authored by professors at the College of Staten Island/CUNY, Mayor Kathy Sheehan recently signed laws which will reduce the city’s speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph, effective January 1, 2025. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance public safety and improve access for all modes of transportation, including the installation of red light cameras, speed humps, and school zone speed cameras. The decision follows a successful model set by New York City, which saw a significant reduction in traffic casualties and crashes after implementing similar changes.
