The College of Staten Island will host a Student and Community Forum to raise awareness about the Hunger-Free Campus Act, a piece of legislation currently pending in New York State that aims to combat food insecurity among college students. The event will take place on Friday, October 31, 2025, from 9:30am to 12:00pm in the Green Dolphin Lounge of the Campus Center (Building 1C).

The Hunger-Free Campus Act seeks to create a statewide program that designates participating institutions as “Hunger-Free Campuses.” Colleges and universities with this designation commit to a range of initiatives designed to ensure that no student goes hungry while pursuing their education. These include establishing a campus hunger task force, offering support for SNAP enrollment, providing access to stigma-free food pantries or alternative food options, developing free meal voucher programs, and organizing events to promote awareness during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.

Additionally, the Act encourages schools to conduct annual surveys on student hunger, build partnerships at local and state levels to strengthen food security efforts, and promote awareness of existing community resources. The legislation also provides potential funding to help sustain these initiatives, empowering campuses to create equitable and supportive environments for all students.

Through this community forum, CSI aims to highlight the importance of addressing food insecurity as a barrier to student success, while fostering collaboration among students, staff, and community partners. The event is open to the CSI community and the public, and PG CLUE credit will be offered for student attendees.
