The English Language Institute (ELI) at the College of Staten Island was recently profiled by Elite Education Magazine in an article titled “Immersive English Learning in the Heart of New York”. The feature highlights ELI’s role in preparing international students for academic and professional success in the U.S., noting its accessible location, university environment, and student-centered programming. As a publication that focuses on private institutes around the world serving globally-minded students—particularly those pursuing future studies or careers in international business—Elite Education Magazine described ELI as offering “an exceptional pathway to cultural fluency and academic advancement.”

The recognition is a testament to the program’s commitment to both linguistic and personal growth for its students. The article notes that “ELI doesn’t just teach English—it provides an immersive experience in American academic and social life,” which reflects the institute’s emphasis on building confidence and real-world communication skills. Program Director Christian Perticone shared that much of ELI’s recent visibility comes from its active engagement with international education networks, including outreach efforts at the NAFSA Annual Conference.

Perticone also emphasized the vital role of the teaching team, composed of Derek Baylor, Thomas Speirs, Gail Hernandez, and Ernest Barteldes. “Our faculty have a wealth of charisma, experience and training. Our students recognize this and consistently rate them as the strongest part of the program. They give and give and give, truly caring about positive outcomes for every student. They’re the heart of the program,” he said. The article and recognition also reflect the collaborative efforts of the broader CSI community, whose support helps deliver high-quality events and educational opportunities that shape the ELI student experience.
