The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has announced a $7M capital investment across the City University of New York system to expand and modernize green workforce training facilities, an initiative that includes projects benefiting the College of Staten Island. The funding will support the development of specialized labs, classrooms, and equipment designed to prepare students for careers in the growing green economy, with a focus on sustainability, renewable energy, and climate-focused industries.
The announcement has generated media attention across multiple outlets. Coverage from New York YIMBY highlighted the infrastructure upgrades and their role in strengthening CUNY’s capacity to train a climate-ready workforce, while CBS News This Morning offered coverage that further underscored the citywide impact of the investment. Together, these reports emphasize the importance of aligning higher education with New York City’s long-term sustainability and workforce development goals.
Specifically for CSI, this latest investment will create a Collaboratory for Sustainable Business program to prepare students for in-demand roles at the intersection of sustainability, finance, and entrepreneurship. Additionally, through its “Developing a Sustainable Workforce for Sustainable Growth of a Green Economy” program, CSI will also expand renewable energy, wind power, and smart grid laboratories with advanced training equipment.
