As we begin the Fall 2026 semester, I want to remind our community of CUNY’s policy regarding religious observances and student accommodations. The Religious Accommodations procedures for CUNY can be found online.
Students whose religious observance conflicts with class attendance, examinations, assignments, or other academic requirements must be provided a reasonable and equivalent opportunity to make up missed work. Students are encouraged to notify their instructors as early as possible when they anticipate a conflict. Faculty should work with students to provide reasonable accommodations and, to the extent possible, avoid scheduling major examinations or other significant academic requirements on days when religious observances are likely to affect a substantial number of students.
Consistent with New York State Education Law 224-a and CUNY policy, students may not be penalized because they are .unable to attend class or participate in an examination, study, or work requirement because of their religious beliefs.
Students and faculty are encouraged to resolve accommodation needs directly whenever possible. Students who need assistance requesting a religious accommodation may contact CSI’s Office of Student Affairs at 718.982.2335 or studentaffairs@csi.cuny.edu. Questions or concerns regarding religious accommodations may also be directed to the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
I encourage everyone to review the CUNY Religions and Ethnic Holiday Calendar when planning examinations, major assignments, and other academic activities throughout the semester.
