The College of Staten Island’s Art Gallery recently welcomed guests for the opening reception of Subtle Subversions: The Art of Patricia Espinosa, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Mexican-born, New York-based artist Patricia Espinosa.
Held on September 17, the reception brought together members of the CSI community and visitors to celebrate Espinosa’s sculpture, drawing, and performance work. The exhibition, presented in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month, explores a range of contemporary themes through Espinosa’s transformation of everyday materials and imagery. Her work addresses topics including gender-based violence and feminist resistance, anti-immigrant sentiment and inclusivity, state repression and community support, and the challenges of maintaining empathy in the face of suffering.
Subtle Subversions will remain on display in the CSI Art Gallery, 1P-112, through October 22. Admission is free, with gallery hours Monday through Thursday from noon to 4pm.
