October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic violence (also called intimate partner violence, domestic abuse, or relationship abuse) is a pattern of behaviors used by a relationally close individual to maintain power and control over another person in an intimate relationship. This does not have to be a sexual partner. It can happen to anyone at any point in a relationship. Domestic violence includes behaviors that physically harm, cause fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish, or force them to behave in ways they do not want.

The Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion can assist community members who are seeking connection to resources regarding intimate partner or domestic violence. ODEI is equipped to help you contact the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office, the Staten Island Family Justice Center, and/or other NYC partners and experts in the DV and gender-based violence sector, like Safe Horizon.

We also encourage all community members to participate in Relationship Workshops hosted by advocacy organization Day One, in our very own Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Conference Room on Tuesday, Oct. 20 during Club Hours. REGISTER ONLINE. We will have space for curious walk-in participants available on the day of, as well.
