The 19th Annual Willowbrook Lecture will be held on Wednesday, April 27 in the Center fo rthe Arts (Building 1P) Recital Hall at 3:00pm. The event will feature a presentation by Professor David Goode of the College’s Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work.
Despite its importance to the history of people with disabilities in this country, relatively little is known about Willowbrook State School and everyday life there. People have many misconceptions about it. Dr. Goode has spent almost 40 years studying institutions for people with intellectual disabilities, and the past 20 investigating Willowbrook State School. Based upon historical documents and interviews with people who worked or lived at Willowbrook, the presentation will cover the history of Willowbrook, what happened at Willowbrook, and will raise issues about what happened after Willowbrook was closed.
All students, faculty and staff are invited to attend. The lecture is also open to the public. There will be an open microphone for questions and comments. Particularly encouraged to attend are those who worked, lived, or had relatives who lived or worked at Willowbrook.
