This week, the celebration of Italian Heritage Month at CSI begins with a schedule of events that you won’t want to miss. Please review the list of events below and mark your calendars accordingly. Please note that most of the events are CLUE certified (PG & CC).  

ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH EVENTS AT CSI

FROM ELLIS ISLAND TO JERSEY SHORE: IMAGES OF ITALIANS IN AMERICA
Wednesday, October 5, Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Recital Hall, 6:30pm to–8:30pm

For close to 200 years the Italians in the United States have been portrayed poorly in the U.S. media. What causes this and what are the effects of such portrayals are the subject of Distinguished Professor Fred Gardaphé’s illustrated talk. Join Distinguished Professor Gardaphé as he addresses Professor Jay Arena’s Minority Groups Class (SOC 240). This CC CLUE-certified event is open to all, and sponsored by the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work, and the Pluralism and Diversity program.

Professor Jones from Performing and Creative Arts will speak about the precious benefits of studying abroad in Italy. All of the CSI students she knows who spend a semester or summer studying abroad in Italy have described the experience as life-altering. What is it about Italy? Is it the friendly people, great faculty and staff, and magnificent art and architecture everywhere you look? She hopes that her talk will convince CSI students to find out for themselves. ITALIAN AMERICANS AT THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK, A PRESENTATION BY DEAN ANTHONY JULIAN TAMBURRI, DEAN OF
THE JOHN D. CALANDRA ITALIAN AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF QUEENS COLLEGE/CUNY
Thursday, Oct. 13, Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Recital Hall, 1:30pm to 3:00pm

Dedicated to the history and culture of Italians in the U.S., Dean Anthony Tamburri is Dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute of Queens College/CUNY and Professor of Italian and Italian/American Studies.  Dean Tamburri will discuss the history of Italians in the U.S. and present on the status of Italian Americans as one of the University’s protected classes. This CC CLUE-certified event is sponsored by the Division of Finance and Administration, and the Pluralism and Diversity program.

RE-MEMBERING IMMIGRANT WOMEN IN THE ANNIVERSARY YEAR OF THE TRIANGLE SHIRTWAIST FACTORY FIRE
Thursday, Oct. 20, Center for the Arts (Building 1P) Williamson Theatre, 1:30pm to 4:00pm

This event will feature a panel discussion, poetry reading, and a film regarding the 1911 disaster that took the lives of 147 workers, mostly immigrant Italian and Jewish women, in a Greenwich Village sweatshop. There will be a question-and-answer session and refreshments will be served. This CC CLUE event is open to the CSI and Staten Island communities. The event is sponsored by the Office of the President, the MA Program in English, the Women’s Center, and the Women, Sexuality, and Gender Studies Program.
 

WORLD ON WEDNESDAY LECTURE SERIES:  RETURNED STUDENT PANEL: STUDY ABROAD IN ITALY
Wednesday, Oct. 26, Campus Center (Building 1C), Room 227, 12:20pm to 1:10 pm

This panel discussion features students who were recent participants in study abroad programs in Italy. CSI sends students to partners in Florence, Rome, Tuscania, and Venice for winter, summer, or semester programs, as well as to a summer faculty-led geology field course, east of Naples. CSI has also sent students for the semester-long CUNY-Italy exchange to universities in Perugia and Siena. CSI students have benefited from a variety of scholarships and grants to support their studies in Italy. The panelists will discuss their experiences, from adjusting to the local culture and society to re-entry adjustment. This CC CLUE-certified event is sponsored by the Center for International Service. 

HERITAGE SPEAKER SERIES: ITALY

CSI student Francesco Cirillo will speak about his Italian roots and family traditions, and present a slideshow of photos of his trips to Italy. This is part of the Heritage Speaker series for the fall semester. The series provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to share their cultural and ethnic heritage through stories, insights, photos, and more. THE FRIDAY MORNING BREAKFAST CLUB: THE ITALIAN INFLUENCE ON STATEN ISLAND

Relax over a light morning snack while meeting and chatting with other students and student mentors. We guarantee that you will make some friends in this one-hour PG CLUE event. This week, in honor of “Italian Heritage Month,” we will discuss the Italian influence on the College of Staten Island. Come early, as seating is limited.
