The College of Staten Island women’s tennis squad won their first match with emphasis on Wednesday afternoon, blowing by the City College of New York in the CUNYAC opener for both teams, 9-0, at the CSI Tennis Center. The Dolphins improved to 1-2 overall on the season while the Beavers fell to 0-2.
CSI was already up on the scoreboard by a 2-0 count as the Beavers conceded the No. 6 Singles and No. 3 Doubles flights. From there, the Dolphisn knew they only needed three flights to seal the win and they were more than halfway home after Doubles.
The CSI team of Ilona Stoyko and Jean Baak got the Dolphins started with a strong 8-2 win over CCNY’s Natalie DeSabato and Katherine Bautista, and one flight down, the freshman tandem of Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert and Mediha Mulla delivered an 8-1 winner over the Beavers’ Diana Yusim and Sherada Bogie.
With a 4-0 lead after Doubles, CSI left little to doubt in Singles play, winning every flight and dropping only a total of 14 games along the way. Bragerton-Nasert defeated DeSabato in the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-3, and Stoyko took her No. 2 flight over Yusim, 6-0, 6-1. No. 3 Jean Baak blanked Bogie, 6-0, 6-0, and one flight down, Mulla defeated Bautista, 6-0, 6-1.
In the most heavily-contested flight of the afternoon, CSI’s Nancy Almazo scored a 7-5, 6-3 winner over CCNY’s Elena Louie in the No. 5 spot.
CSI will next be in action on Saturday, traveling to Farmingdale State College to take on the Rams in a non-conference game at 1pm.
