CSI's Victoria Procopio pitched a total of seven scoreless innings and went 5-5 with 5 RBI at the plate
The College of Staten Island women’s softball squad exited the 2013 regular season with a pair of wins, blanking the College of New Rochelle in a non-conference doubleheader at the CSI Softball Complex. The Dolphins won the opener, 13-0, before winning game two, 12-0. CSI improved to 21-14 as they get ready for the CUNYAC postseason. CNR fell to 5-26.
CSI pitcher Victoria Procopio took the win in the opener, holding the Blue Angels to just two hits. Meanwhile, the Dolphins opened up a 6-0 lead in the game’s first inning. A Procopio RBI-triple started the damage and she came around to score on the same play via error. A Danielle Locke single plated Stefanie Solari, and later in the inning, CSI’s ninth-hitter Chyanne Gilliam roped a two-RBI single as well.
CSI scored three runs in each of the next two innings to put the game out of reach. Maxine Jasko smacked a two-RBI single in the second inning to highlight that frame, while an RBI-triple by Gilliam was a catalyst in the third.
CSI out-hit CNR, 18-2 in the contest as all nine CSI starters hit safely, led by Procopio’s 3-3 performance, adding a pair of RBI.
In the second contest, CSI again went on top early and never looked back. Four hits in the first inning, including RBI singles by Procopio and Solari got things started, giving the Dolphins a 2-0 lead after a frame. CSI added six more runs in the second, helped along by a pair of CNR errors. Alissa Setteducato posted a triple in the inning while Christina Tufano added a double. Another two-RBI single by Solari highlighted a three-run third inning as CSI was well on their way to victory.
Procopio pitched the first two innings for CSI, and then yielded to Brittany Smith, who picked up the win with three innings of relief, as the two combined for the no-hit shutout. CSI out-hit CNR, 18-0, with Solari leading the way by going 3-3 with 4 RBI.
Next for CSI will be the CUNYAC Postseason Championship Tournament. The tourney begins tomorrow with single elimination games, of which CSI and Baruch College have received byes. No. 3 Brooklyn College plays No. 6 Lehman College tomorrow, and the winner of that game will face CSI at 2pm on Friday to kick off their half of the double-elimination stage of the tourney. Baruch will play the winner of No. 4 Hunter College vs. No. 5 John Jay College at 12 Noon. The two losing sides will play in an elimination game at 4pm, while the two winning sides will play again at 6pm. The tournament will then continue into Saturday, beginning at 12 Noon. All games on Friday and Saturday will be played at CSI.
