The Gallery of the College of Staten Island/CUNY is pleased to announce the first exhibition of the fall semester, Seeing the Monumental in the Minute: German Renaissance Prints in the Age of Dürer from the Wetmore Print Collection of Connecticut College.

The show will open on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013 and close on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013.

Thirty-two engravings from the late 15th century to the early 16th century will be on view and will include works by the master printmakers of the period, Martin Schongauer, Hans Sebald Beham, and the incomparable Albrecht Dürer. These works from the early history of Western printmaking are as exquisite in their technique and execution as they are in their diminutive size. They testify to the burgeoning interest in secular subject matter and scenes recalling daily life. Charming depictions of dancing peasants, marketplace, and banqueting scenes are added to the artists’ repertoire of religious and mythological subjects.  The art of Rembrandt, Hogarth, Goya, and the Impressionists, as well as modern art movements are all heirs to this dynamic and innovative period in the history of Western Art.

Please join us for the opening reception on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.
