According to U.S. Central Command, as of today 6,744 service men and women have perished in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn to date since September 11, 2001.
In remembrance of the fallen, beginning the morning of Thursday, Nov. 7, the College of Staten Island Veterans Support Services (VSS) will place a single flag, each bearing the name of every service member who has lost his or her life, on CSI’s Great Lawn. Flags for the Fallen is sponsored by the Disabilities and Veterans Affairs Commission, Student Government, Veterans Educational Transition Services, and the Armed Forces Club. A Retreat Ceremony, beginning at 4:45 pm on Friday, Nov. 8, will conclude the program. The flags will remain until 5:00pm.
In addition, in honor of those fallen heroes, Veterans Support Services is working to raise funds for a Military Service Scholarship. The scholarship will go to assist student veterans who are not eligible for state or federal veteran education benefits. To donate go online and select “Flags for the Fallen” in the “Designation” drop box to donate.
If you have any questions regarding the event or the scholarship, please contact Ann Treadaway, MA, Director, Veterans Support Services at 718.982.3108 or ann.treadaway@csi.cuny.edu.
