I am pleased to announce that following a ten-month national search, and consultation with a faculty-led search committee and many segments of the CSI community, I have selected Nan Sussman to recommend to Interim President Fritz for appointment as Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. Dr. Sussman will continue a 30-year career at CSI that has been characterized by strong leadership in a variety of positions and offices. She is a Professor in the Department of Psychology, where she was elected Chair, and a member of the Doctoral Faculty at The Graduate Center. She also served as Associate Dean of Faculty, Special Assistant to the President, Dean of College Advancement, Executive Director of the CSI Foundation, and founding Director of the Center for International Service.
Dean Sussman was the recipient of two Fulbright Fellowships (Japan and Hong Kong), was elected Fellow of the American Psychological Association, and was awarded a Professional Associate’s Fellowship at the East-West Center in Honolulu. Her recent book, Return Migration and Identity, was nominated for a book award from the Asia Society. Her forthcoming co-authored book, Intercultural Communication, is due out this year. She was recently elected President of the International Academy for Intercultural Research and serves as a grant panelist for the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. Dr. Sussman has been a visiting professor or lecturer at five international universities.
Dean Sussman was the former Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Prior to joining CSI, she was Director of International Training at the International Council on Education for Teaching in Washington, DC and a Cross-cultural Specialist at Georgetown University’s Center for Applied Linguistics.
The Division of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest at the College, composed of nine departments, ten interdisciplinary programs, and five graduate degrees. It serves 180 faculty, 600 part-time faculty, and 5,000 majors. Consequent to a positive action by the CUNY Board of Trustees, on behalf of the College, I welcome Dr. Sussman to the Academic Administration.
