The College of Staten Island baseball program announced another set of all-stars, as pitcher Brian Russell was named a second-team all-star by D3baseball.com in the New York Region. Freshman Elijah Rodriguez was awarded third-team honors.
The ace of the Dolphins’ staff, Russell was 5-1 with a 1.62 ERA through seven starts and 55.2 innings pitched. He led all Dolphins with 56 strikeouts, and opponents batted just .195 against him. Russell allowed just 10 earned runs on the hill and only seven extra-base hits, 38 total. He also recorded three complete games, a shutout, and a save. In 10.2 innings in the CUNYAC Championship Tournament in early-May, Russell fanned 14 batters in 10.2 innings, earning a win.
A welcomed addition in his first season, Rodriguez was a constant on the hot corner for the Dolphins, and batted .363 this season at the plate, leading the squad with 14 doubles, five homeruns, 29 walks, a .485 on-base percentage, and 15 stolen bases on 17 attempts. Rodriguez also led the team in runs scored with 42, and was tied for the team lead with 29 RBI. He also led the squad with a .607 slugging percentage. He played in all 40 games for the Dolphins, making 39 starts. His two-run double in the bottom of the 12th inning clinched the Dolphins’ 10-9 CUNYAC Championship win over Baruch College.
CSI finished 25-15 this season, earning their 17th postseason conference title. For the Dolphins, it was their sixth 20+ win season in the past seven years.
