The College of Staten Island women’s soccer team opened up the offense and stayed unbeaten in their last 25 CUNYAC regular season games, taking their conference opener this season against Medgar Evers College, 14-0, in a game played Wednesday evening in Brooklyn, NY. CSI improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in CUNYAC with the victory, while MEC fell to 0-4 overall and 0-2 within the CUNYAC.
The goal scoring came early and often in this one, and it took just 8:20 for the Dolphins to score the game-winner, a Danielle Smith strike off of a Jennifer Cosenza corner kick. Three minutes later, Danielle Alexandrini scored her sixth of the season off of another Cosenza helper and 50 seconds after that, CSI took complete control with a Stephanie Rivera marker on a 25-yard strike that beat MEC keeper Marlene Thompson.
Alexandrini registered a first half hat trick tallying in the 12th and 25th minutes, and in-between those goals, Kathryn Dowling scored on a breakaway. After three assists, Cosenza finally got a goal of her own in minute number 28, making it 7-0, and reserve Jessica Quiroz scored her first of the year in the 43rd minute to secure an 8-0 halftime edge.
CSI added six more in the second period. Senior Senda Karagozler assisted on the first two goals by Rivera and Quiroz, then got one of her own in the 66th minute. Quiroz registered the second hat trick of the day for CSI on a breakaway in the 62nd minute.
All told, CSI enjoyed a 37-1 shot advantage (22-0 on goal) and a 12-2 edge in corner kicks. The 14 CSI goals scored match a CSI single game record. They beat Brooklyn College 14-4 back in 2012. The hat-tricks by Alexandrini and Quiroz are the 25th and 26st in CSI history. Cosenza’s four assists match the third-highest total in CSI single game history.
CSI will continue their conference slate on Saturday, when they travel to face Lehman College at 2pm. CSI is now unbeaten in 24-0-1 in their last 25 CUNYAC regular season games.
