The Department of History invites the CSI community to a memorial for Professor Emeritus Fred Binder, who passed away on Jan. 16. It will be held on Sunday, May 1 at 10:00 am in the Library (Building 1L).
Prof. Binder had a positive impact on many aspects of CSI during his 24-year tenure with the College (from 1974 to 1998). Beyond teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for which he won a Dolphin Award for teaching in 1983, and chairing the History Department, he founded the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies [MALS] program, was instrumental in gaining approval for the MA in History program, helped to establish the General Education program, assisted in bolstering the number of faculty in the History Department, and served on the College Council and University Senate. He also was an Associate Dean at Richmond College for five years prior to the merger of Staten Island Community College and Richmond College.
More recently, Fred generously endowed two funds at the CSI Foundation to provide awards for full-time History faculty research, and to support the graduate studies of exceptional History MA students. These two funds will serve as monuments to an exceptional person, historian, colleague, and friend.
Prof. Binder is co-editor of a two-volume social history called The Way We Lived: Essays and Documents in American Social History, a work that joins the five books that he wrote while he taught at CSI.
