The College of Staten Island’s Athletics Program is mourning the loss of Staten Island native Alexandra (Allie) Vreeland, who was honored by the CSI Baseball team in 2015 as a pioneer against breast cancer. After a lengthy battle with the disease, Vreeland passed away on Friday in North Carolina surrounded by her family and friends.
A aspiring singer and songwriter who started a support group on Staten Island in 2015 for other young victims with the disease, Vreeland was a colleague of Head Baseball Coach Michael Mauro at One-on-One Physical Therapy on Staten Island, and so it was natural for the Baseball program to make her a guest of honor at their annual Grace Hillery Breast Cancer Awareness Night in 2015. It started a friendship that was fortified with a tremendous night of giving, and has lasted through her untimely passing just days ago.
“We are all broken-hearted right now,” said Mauro. “Thinking back to the night she threw out the first pitch, she was so brave and strong, as if nothing was wrong. She was an unbelievable fighter who was taken from us way too soon. Our prayers are with her and her family and she will be dearly missed.”
A wake will be held at Gordon Funeral Home on Monday and funeral arrangements will take place at Wolf Pond Baptist Church on Tuesday, both in Monroe, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family will be asking for donations through the websites listed in Allie’s name to:
