Donna Gerstle, Director of the Center for Environmental Science and the Principal Investigator of the Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative (SIBCRI) at the College of Staten Island/CUNY was selected as a 2017 Woman of Distinction for the 24th Senate District by Senator Andrew J. Lanza. The Woman of Distinction program honors exemplary women from across New York State whose professional accomplishments, personal achievements, or commitment to excellence merit special recognition. The program was created in 1998 as part of the State celebration of Women’s History Month.
Professor Gerstle is also the Deputy Coordinator of the Environmental Science Master’s Program and lectures in the Departments of Physics, Environmental Science, and Mathematics. For decades, Prof. Gerstle has lent her scientific, legal, and educational expertise to collaborate with government agencies and officials to promote a healthier environment.
