Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) visited the College of Staten Island today to announce she secured $2.9 million in the federal budget for CSI’s STEM Labs. The funding will support over 100 projects at the College ranging from new equipment and technology used by students in STEM majors to new construction of labs, state-of-the-art instructional facilities and cooperative workspaces for faculty and students to prepare them for their academic journey and their future careers.

“I’m proud to have secured this funding to help the College of Staten Island continue to upgrade their STEM facilities and purchase new state-of-the-art equipment so our students can learn in the best environment possible,” Congresswoman Malliotakis said. “This investment will allow CSI to provide nursing, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics and math students with a high-quality education and fantastic hands-on learning experience so they can thrive in their studies and become successful leaders in the STEM field.”

More specifically, funding will be used for:

  • Upgrades to CSI’s Nursing Simulation Lab, including interdisciplinary patient, birthing, and neonatal simulator packages, and new virtual bedside monitors;
  • Extensive upgrades to CSI’s Biology Labs, including both an anatomage interactive anatomy display table and virtual reality anatomy visualizations systems to go with muscular and skeletal models, compound microscopes, and various biorama;
  • The replacement of 29 fume hoods at CSI’s Chemistry Labs, the addition of two liquid chromatograph and infrared spectroscopy machines, and 54 new computers;
  • Advancements to CSI’s Engineering Labs including adding a hydrogen fuel cell trainer, solar systems trainer, geothermal trainer, and new construction of a mobile robotics training system;
  • New equipment at CSI’s Physics Labs to replace telescopes and other periphery;
  • The creation of a state-of-the-art Math instruction lab for 30 students including flip tops, screens, and work stations

“Funding received from Representative Nicole Malliotakis’ $2.9M appropriation will allow for new construction, the addition of state-of-the-art equipment, and upgrades to our science and technology labs that will further enhance the student experience, learning, and research opportunities within these majors,” said College of Staten Island President Dr. Timothy Lynch. “It will serve to further develop our nationally-recognized academic programs and give new generations of CSI students the hand-on materials and environments needed for instruction and training that prepares them for careers in STEM.”

“The $2.9 million secured by Congresswoman Malliotakis for the College of Staten Island will provide a significant boost for CUNY’s efforts to elevate STEM education and expand career opportunities in those fields for our students,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “This funding will allow CSI to make major upgrades and construct labs in a wide range of STEM disciplines, which will benefit students and Staten Island and advance CUNY’s commitment to lifting all of New York and its economy.
