In his latest essay “Toward a Just and Sustainable Energy Transition,” featured in the Los Angeles Review of Books, CSI Professor Ashley Dawson argues that simply adding more renewable energy isn’t enough — we must also dismantle entrenched systems of fossil fuel extraction and injustice that underlie the “green transition.” Drawing on Thea Riofrancos’s Extraction: The Frontiers of Green Capitalism and Nicholas Beuret’s Or Something Worse: Why We Need to Disrupt the Climate Transition, Dawson explores how demands for critical minerals like lithium and cobalt risk perpetuating colonial‐style extraction, social inequality, and environmental harm unless we reimagine how we produce, power, and live.
