This week, we were confronted with a disturbing and unacceptable act of vandalism when a student saw hateful drawings in a campus bathroom and reported it. It was immediately referred to the New York Police Department (NYPD) in accordance with our established protocols. Following their investigation, the incident has been classified as a hate crime and the images were subsequently removed.
Let me be unequivocal: acts of hate, intimidation, and vandalism have no place on this campus. They are not tolerated, they are not excused, and they are not consistent with who we are as a College community.
We are hoping to be able to gain information that may help us identify the person or persons who engaged in this type of behavior. If identified, the College will proceed with disciplinary action to the fullest extent allowed under our policies, procedures, and laws. They will also be reported to the NYPD for appropriate action.
The College of Staten Island and The City University of New York remain steadfast in our position that this campus, and the system of which we are a part, be safe and welcoming to all. I applaud the individual who reported the incident yesterday and encourage anyone who experiences or becomes aware of any acts of this nature to immediately report such incidents to one or all of the following:
- Public Safety at 718.982.2111 or PublicSafety@csi.cuny.edu
- Office of Diversity and Compliance at 718.982.2250 or DEI@csi.cuny.edu or Tara.Mastrangelo@csi.cuny.edu
- CUNY’s University-Wide Discrimination and Retaliation Reporting Portal
We must all commit to doing our part to end such abhorrent behavior.
We understand that incidents like this can be distressing. Students seeking emotional support are encouraged to contact the Counseling Center at 718.982.2391, where counselors are available 24/7. Faculty and staff may contact the Employee Assistance Program, CCA@YourSide, at 800.833.8707.
Let us continue to stand together against hate and uphold the values of respect, dignity, and unity that define our campus.
In Solidarity,
Timothy G. Lynch, Ph.D.
