There is a serious problem in the College’s electrical substation and, after extensive consultation with CUNY Engineers, private electrical engineers, and Con Edison personnel, it has been deemed necessary to shut down the electrical power to the entire campus. This repair requires the services of a specially trained vendor and thus, based on vendor availability and the advice of Con Edison, power to the entire campus will be shut down on Saturday, May 9 at 4:30pm in order to conduct the necessary emergency repairs. This will impact all of the College’s buildings and activities–all classes and activities scheduled after 4:00pm [on May 9] will be cancelled and the College will be closed at that time, due to lack of electrical power. We anticipate having power restored within six to eight hours. The repairs will be conducted by a private contractor as well as Con Edison. 

In order to ensure a smooth shutdown the following steps MUST BE TAKEN:

-All offices must turn off all computers, printers, fax machines, copiers, and all electronic equipment. Also, disconnect this equipment from electrical outlets. Please make sure that this is done at the end of business on Friday, May 8, 2009.

-The College’s Website and email system will shut down at noon on Saturday, May 9, 2009 until power is restored. 

-Only emergency lighting will be available in campus buildings. 

-Faculty, staff, and students conducting experiments in any campus laboratory are strongly encouraged to power down sensitive equipment if at all possible.  Back-up power may be available but cannot be guaranteed under the current conditions.   

-In Building 6S any equipment that cannot be powered down should be connected to red emergency power outlets, and any data or settings should be backed up. 

We apologize for this inconvenience; however, we need to take these actions and implement these critical repairs.
