This memorandum will clarify CUNY’s policy regarding questions that have been raised about the snow days on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 and Friday, Feb. 26, when the College was closed and for Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010 when the College delayed opening until 11:00am.
College Closed on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010 and Friday, Feb. 26, 2010
Full–time classified and instructional staff employees, other than essential employees, will be granted leave with pay and without charge to annual leave accruals, except for employees who were on scheduled annual leave or sick leave (temporary disability leave). Adjunct teaching staff will receive their regular pay. Full–time faculty and adjunct teaching instructional staff are expected to make up the lost instructional time.
Part–time employees (e.g., College Assistants, Non–Teaching Adjuncts, and Adjunct College Laboratory Technicians) shall not be paid for the day, but will be permitted to make up the lost hours of work in accordance with the needs and resources of the College. When it is not feasible to assign make-up hours, we will permit part–time employees to charge the absence to available annual leave, if the collective bargaining agreement covering the title provides annual leave (e.g., College Assistants).
College Closed until 11:00am on Thursday, February 11, 2010
Full-time classified staff who did not report to work due to the weather shall have the entire work day charged to annual leave accruals, if available. Sick leave may be used to cover an absence only if acceptable documentation is provided.
Full-time teaching instructional staff and adjunct teaching instructional staff who did not report to work due to the weather shall receive their regular pay. They are expected to make up the lost instructional time.
Full-time, non-teaching instructional staff who did not report to work due to the weather must charge the absence for the entire work day to annual leave or receive no pay for the day at the employee’s option. Requests to use sick leave must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If there is reason to be suspicious of a particular request to use sick leave, medical documentation may be required.
Part-time employees (e.g., College Assistants, Non-Teaching Adjuncts, and Adjunct College Laboratory Technicians) who did not report to work due to the weather shall not be paid for their normally scheduled hours prior to 11:00am, but should be permitted to make up the hours of work lost in accordance with the needs and resources of the College. When it is not feasible to assign make-up hours, the College may permit part-time employees to charge the absence to available annual leave, if the collective bargaining agreement covering the title provides annual leave (e.g., College Assistants).
Time and Leave Practices for Essential Employees
For all dates, regardless of whether the College was closed the entire day or opened at 11:00am, employees previously designated by the College as essential employees, who nevertheless did not report to work, shall not be paid for the day.
