College of Staten Island women started off their 2011 season with a 5-1 win over NYU-Polytechnic at the CSI Soccer Complex on Thursday afternoon. Demi-Jean Martorano’s hat-trick helped lead the Dolphins to a 1-0 record while the Fighting Blue Jays took a 0-1 start.
There were 13 attempts by CSI before the first goal was scored by Samantha Wysokowski at the 34:45 minute mark. Melissa Gelardi’s pass from a corner kick found the head of Wysokowski at the mouth of the net for the Dolphins first goal of the season. Three minutes later a hard shot that was hit off of the post by Gelardi met Natalie Tombasco for a quick goal and a 2-0 lead for CSI going into the second half.
Just five minutes into the second half, Martorano scored the team’s third goal off of a lead pass from Tombasco a few feet away from NYU-Poly’s goalkeeper. Martorano struck again at the 58 minute point as another Tombasco crossover pass met her for a goal down the middle lane. Still hot, Martorano scored CSI’s final goal with seven minutes remaining on a corner kick.
With 10 seconds left on the clock, NYU-Poly’s Megan Hightower scored on a free kick, the team’s only shot, to crush the Dolphins shut out.
Martorano had seven shot attempts with five on goal while Tombasco added four with two assists. Christa Pappalardo had four saves in goal for the Fighting Blue-Jays.
The Dolphins will host Old Westbury on Wednesday, September 7, at 4:30 pm.
