Olivia Tierno led the Dolphins to a win with 18 points and five steals.

The College of Staten Island women’s basketball team captured their first win of the season with a 76-41 victory over York College in Tuesday’s evening conference match in Staten Island. The Dolphins earn a 1-3 record and 1-0 CUNYAC record while the Cardinals fall 0-4 and 0-1 in the CUNYAC.

The Dolphins opened up to quick eight point lead before four back-to-back baskets (three-pointer, jumper and two layups) by Victoria Gallinaro extended the Dolphins gap to 17 in the first nine minutes of play. With quiet exchange from the 12th minute down to the 7th, Olivia Tierno’s jumper broke the silence to lead CSI to a 29-7 go ahead. York added six points in the next minute to close the gap to 18 at the four minute spot. From there, the Cardinals would score no more as CSI would extend their lead to 30 going into halftime with a 43-13 score.

CSI didn’t back down to start the second stanza as they extended the lead to 35 in the first two minutes. Nia Rene scored two consecutive baskets to help York to a 5-0 run. CSI’s Nikki Fabozzi assisted three of the next four baskets to help the Dolphins to a 9-0 run and  their greatest lead of the game of 42 points in the 13th minute. CSI took a steady lead into the final minutes before York’s Stayce Myirhead closed the gap with to 34 with nine consecutive points.

The Cardinals had 37 turnovers to CSI’s 21. CSI shot 42% on the field including 38% from three point range to York’s 30.6% with no three pointers made.

Tierno led with 18 points, five steals and three assists. Gallinaro had 13 points while Megan Myhre 12 points. Fabozzi totaled a team-high six assists and eight rebounds.

Ishonda McFarland led for York with 12 points and rebounds while Muirhead had 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Dolphins will be back in action on Saturday, December 1, as they host Brooklyn College in a 12:00 pm contest.
