The College of Staten Island women’s softball team won their first games of the 2013 season in rather convincing fashion, scoring a doubleheader sweep of visiting Sarah Lawrence College at the CSI Softball Complex this afternoon as part of non-conference play. CSI won the opener, 12-0, and then coasted to a 16-1 win in the second game in shortened five-inning games. CSI improved to 2-3 overall with the winning pair, while the Gryphons fell to a season-opening 0-2.
CSI erupted for eight runs in the very first inning of the opener, en route to their 12-0 win. Brittany Smith opened with a bunt single, and after stealing second, she advanced on a Victoria Procopio infield pop, and then took home on an errant throw to get her at third base. One batter later, Stefanie Solari tripled and came home when Maxine Jasko earned on via an error one batter later. Danielle Locke added an RBI-triple that scored Jasko. CSI scored on a bases loaded passed ball before Smith got her second bunt single of the inning, scoring Taylor Kaplan. To punctuate the inning, Procopio smashed a two-RBI single in the next at-bat.
The eight run lead proved more than enough for Procopio, who earned the complete-game one-hitter for the Dolphins, striking out three batters. After Locke highlighted CSI’s scoring in the second and third innings with RBI singles in each inning, Procopio added another one of her own in the fourth to close out the scoring. Hayley Adams provided SLC’s only hit of the game in the third inning, but Procopio took out the next eight batters in order to preserve the win.
In the second game, sophomore Brittany Smith entered the circle for her first career pitching start, and she impressed by also going the distance allowing just two hits (both in the second inning), fanning three.
Like the first game, CSI got up early, pulling ahead 5-0 after the first inning. An inside-the-park homerun by Procopio into the gap in right-center scored Smith to open the scoring against SLC starter Rebecca Kuntz. CSI’s Solari, Jasko, and Christina Tufano then followed up with back-to-back-to-back triples to close out the scoring.
The Gryphons scored their only run on the afternoon in the second inning. Lauren Gray and Ciaran Rhodes opened with singles, and after advancing a base due to a wild pitch, Gray came in on an Anhad Hundal ground ball. CSI countered with another five-spot in the second inning, highlighted by another Tufano RBI-triple and a Locke RBI-double. The Dolphins added another four runs in the third and two in the fourth, scattering a total of 22 hits in the contest.
At the dish, Brittany Smith finished the day 7-for-8 with two RBI and six runs scored, while teammate Procopio went 5-for-6 with six RBI and two runs scored. Solari went 6-for-8 with three runs scored while Tufano and Locke each finished with five hits apiece.
CSI will next be in action on Thursday afternoon against Briarcliffe College at 4:30pm, for a doubleheader at the CSI Softball Complex.
