I am pleased to announce that Charles Gomes has been appointed the College of Staten Island’s Interim Athletic Director, effective Monday, Apr. 29, 2013.
Mr. Gomes brings a vast amount of experience to the Athletic Director position. Before coming to CSI, he served in various roles for the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame’s “Play It Smart” program for nearly a decade. The highly successful program supported high school student-athletes from economically disadvantaged environments where family and community support were often lacking. Mr. Gomes worked as a Regional Coordinator from 2001 to 2004 before being promoted to National Director, and eventually Chief Operating Officer/Executive Director of the program.
From 1998 to 2001, Mr. Gomes served as an Academic Counselor at Springfield College’s “Center for Youth Development Through Sport,” where he worked with student-athletes at several NYC public schools. In 1997-1998, he was an Academic Counselor for the Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Mr. Gomes has also consulted for several National Football League youth initiatives and special events including the NFL Coaching Academy, NFL Junior Player Development, and NFL High School Player Development. For the past 11 years, he has also coordinated a free football camp with Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett, hosting more than 300 student-athletes from the tri-state area annually at Princeton University.
He received his MEd in Athletic Counseling and Administration from Springfield College and BA in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
Mr. Gomes served as the Director of the College Now program at CSI since 2009, and under his leadership, College Now has experienced a doubling in enrollment and a 94% student success rate.
The Interim Athletic Director and Athletic Department will now be reporting directly to the President’s Office. The College Now Program will continue to be housed in the Division of Enrollment Management and will be incorporated within the Office of Academic Support.
These changes will allow greater integration of athletics within the College, providing increased support of our student-athletes, and ensuring continued excellence in the future of athletics at CSI.
