STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE — A sea of pink descended upon the College of Staten Island Saturday morning for the third-annual walk-a-thon to help support breast cancer research.

The school’s Center for Environmental Science organized the event to also benefit its Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative — a program that studies the environments effect on a person’s health.
Saturday’s theme, “Live Green, Embrace Pink,” took on an environmental approach — the roughly one-mile route was marked with lawn signs containing facts on how to promote energy efficiency and a greener lifestyle, in addition to important facts about breast cancer prevention.
Naked Sheep Yarn Shop in Travis sold knitted and crocheted items during the walkathon to support the cause.
After the walk, participants were given the chance to meet with health educators.
